Vineyard Retreat – Eola Hills
Salem, Oregon
Ten minutes from Salem, Oregon in the Amity – Eola Hills Appellation of the Willamette Valley lies a property right out of Sunset Magazine (see Sunset article). Owners Greg and Anne Cost worked with Jill Lewis and Lane Williams of Coop 15 Architects (link to Coop 15 website) on this stunning makeover of the existing farmhouse. Warm, natural wood tones combine with stainless, concrete, and walls of windows to create an enviable marriage of modern and traditional. All the existing kitchen cabinets were retained, as they were made from a single walnut tree that grew on the property. The owners enjoy views of the vineyard and coastal mountains from every room, with spectacular sunsets throughout the year. Eola Hills is about an hour drive to Portland, and is an area that has seen many high profile vineyards develop in the last 20 years. Some of the area vineyards include Canary Hill, Evesham Woods, Cristom, Witness Tree, and Bethel Heights
.
The owners have developed part of the 21 acre property into a small Pinot Noir vineyard. The soils are predominantly Nekia which is red silty clay over volcanic basalt. Nekia is the predominant type in the Eola Hills and closely related to the Jory soils series which the Dundee Hills, just north of here, are famous for, and which produces many of the top Oregon wines. The fruit has been sold to various local winemakers, with a portion being bottled as a private custom crush label. There is room to expand the vineyard by approximately 5 acres if desired.
